Summary

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with progressive limitations of spinal and thoracic mobility increasing with duration of disease. Pathological process in spine and peripheral joints is responsible for pain and stiffness and in many cases it may lead to severe disability. Intensive physiotherapy, and patient’s education supported with drug therapy and occasional surgery play an essential role in maintaining the posture and decrease development of functional disability in AS.
